Healing From Division
For the last several years, we’ve been living with split and polarized viewpoints. In essence, I’m totally right, and you’re totally wrong. This resembles the way that borderline psychosis operates. All good and all bad. Klein called this the Paranoid-Schizoid Position. Everything bad is projected on the other person or party. What Klein called the Depressive Position results when we can hold complexity and nuance, and refrain from projecting our suffering onto others. We can contain and hold things that are complex, without making everything into a black and white issue. Unfortunately, media and political parties want us to split to support their power struggle. In order to handle this, we must see through the urge to split and identify complexity in issues that are charged. Some things about this make sense, and some do not. We can take the perspectives of others and say that both are legitimate depending on the viewpoint, and both have truths to them. This is the only way out of the dangerous splitting that is occurring across the society.
